Jesus is our Goel. Our kinsman redeemer

,

Meditation

Reader,

Today's passage is built on the contrast between an earthly redemption, which can be bought with silver or gold, and a spiritual redemption, which can only be bought with the blood of Christ.

Jesus is our Goel, not a distant relative, but one who pays for our redemption with his own flesh. He doesn't send money; he spends himself and restores us to sonship, to being his own possession.

The idea of redemption and the redeemer is quite shocking because the redemption price reveals the value of the redeemed.

The idea that we are worth His blood is extraordinary.

Jesus is Jehovah-Goel.

Today's text is 1 Peter 1:17-21

Be Holy

17 Since you call on a Father who judges each person’s work impartially, live out your time as foreigners here in reverent fear.

18 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.

20 He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake. 21 Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God.

Encouragement

So you are no longer a slave, but God's child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.

Galatians 4:7

Reader, I'm extending our break by an additional week as I have a very heavy schedule with an eighteenth birthday, a high school graduation, and due diligence for a business I am buying, all crammed into one week. With so much going on, I won't be able to give BCC the attention it deserves. So we'll start up again next Monday. You won't see the familiar daily emails from me this week that prompt you to copy any text from the Bible. As I noted last week, Malachi Daily, is a great alternative...

, Meditation Reader, The phrase "ignorance is bliss" was originally coined by the English poet Thomas Gray in 1742, reflecting the idea that when we are children, blissfully ignorant of adult concerns, we are truly happy. But ignorance isn't bliss; it's blindness, and ignorance sustained is loss. When Jesus tells us that he is the light of the world, as he does twice in John's Gospel, he is promising two things at once. An end to ignorance and the beginning of wisdom, and also an end to fear....

, Meditation Reader, Jehovah Ori, the Lord, my light, is the last of the names in this series. As we noted at the start of this season, the names themselves are a promise from God not simply a name. Each of the names finds its fulfillment in Jesus. So as we've gone through this season, we featured an Old Testament passage declaring the name and the promise, followed by a New Testament passage showing the fulfillment in Jesus. One thing that has consistently stood out is that these names are...
