Meditation
β
Reader,
β
Today's short passage is one of the most memorable and powerful of the stories recounted between Jesus' resurrection and his ascension.
β
Peter is first forgiven and then (as we'll copy out tomorrow) restored.
β
All the commentaries I've read on this passage highlight the threefold repetition of Jesus' question, "Do you love me?" as mirroring his three-time denial of Jesus. The symmetry between the offense and the forgiveness is clear.
β
Most importantly, Peter's assurance that he does love him is a humble one. He longer boasts of in his own strength, but rather in Jesus' power, "Lord you know all things."
β
The rhythmic back and forth makes this passage particularly enjoyable to copy out.
β
Today's text is John 21:15β17 and will take about 3 minutes to copy out.
Jesus Reinstates Peter
15 When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, βSimon son of John, do you love me more than these?β
β
βYes, Lord,β he said, βyou know that I love you.β
β
Jesus said, βFeed my lambs.β
β
16 Again Jesus said, βSimon son of John, do you love me?β
He answered, βYes, Lord, you know that I love you.β
β
Jesus said, βTake care of my sheep.β
β
17 The third time he said to him, βSimon son of John, do you love me?β
β
Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, βDo you love me?β He said, βLord, you know all things; you know that I love you.β
Encouragement
"As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us."
