Meditation
Reader,
Today’s passage is the longest one in our season in Philippians (you can take more than one day to copy it if needed!). Paul is saying his thanks and his goodbyes.
The church in Philippi has been one of Paul’s most faithful financial supporters for the past ten years—more than any other church he has established or visited.
But what he hopes most of all is that their generosity toward him is seen as a pleasing gift to God, similar to the fragrant offerings and sacrifices of Old Testament times.
When Paul sends his greetings at the end of this letter, notice how he specifically mentions “those who belong to Caesar’s household.” These aren’t the Roman guards that he mentioned back in chapter 1, verse 13.
The people in this passage are servants, slaves, or various officials—members of the Emperor’s household and staff that Paul has had contact with and has witnessed to.
Some are now believers in Jesus thanks to Paul’s presence in Rome. Once again, we see how Paul’s circumstances, including his suffering, have worked out for his good and for the good of others.
I hope that by copying out the entire book of Philippians, you’ve gotten to know Paul better as a real person who wrote a real letter to the real family of God.
I hope that his inspired words have increased your faith and brought you encouragement each day. But even more, I pray that you’ve come to know Jesus better through this letter, and also have experienced more joy in the Lord!
Today’s text is Philippians 4:14-20
14 Yet it was good of you to share in my troubles. 15 Moreover, as you Philippians know, in the early days of your acquaintance with the gospel, when I set out from Macedonia, not one church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving, except you only; 16 for even when I was in Thessalonica, you sent me aid more than once when I was in need.
17 Not that I desire your gifts; what I desire is that more be credited to your account.
18 I have received full payment and have more than enough. I am amply supplied, now that I have received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent. They are a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God.
19 And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.
20 To our God and Father be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
Final Greetings
21 Greet all God’s people in Christ Jesus. The brothers and sisters who are with me send greetings. 22 All God’s people here send you greetings, especially those who belong to Caesar’s household.
23 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen
