The chief of sinners

Meditation

Good morning Reader,

In this opening chapter of 1 Timothy, Paul dedicates himself to persuading Timothy to stay in Ephesus...and uses the example of himself as an encouragement to Timothy.

As the worst of sinners, saved by grace and put to work, he holds up his own story as proof that no one is beyond mercy or useless to God.

His past didn't disqualify him. His ignorance and unbelief didn't excuse his sin, though they invited mercy. What saved him was exceedingly abundant grace.

Thinking about all this, Paul breaks into praise of the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God.

This hymn is inspired by verse 17 and not only makes a good accompaniment to today's work but will put joy in your heart for the day ahead.

Today's verses are 1 Timothy 1:12-17

12 And I thank him who enabled me, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he counted me faithful, appointing me to service;13 although I was before a blasphemer, a persecutor, and insolent. However, I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief.

14 The grace of our Lord abounded exceedingly with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.

15 The saying is faithful and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.

16 However, for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first, Jesus Christ might display all his patience, for an example of those who were going to believe in him for eternal life.

17 Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

Meditation Good morning Reader, We ended our first week in 1 Timothy on Friday, copying out verses 1–7 of Ch. 2. Paul mandates prayer for everyone, because God wants everyone saved. Today's verses (8–15) show how the church should carry itself in prayer so it serves that purpose instead of undercutting it. Men are to pray without quarrels, and women are to be marked by godliness and quietness rather than display. Paul is urging Timothy (and us) to craft a church whose worship matches its...

Meditation Good morning Reader, A pastor's first job is to lead a praying people. So, Paul puts prayer first in his instructions for the church, ahead of everything else. In today's verses, he names four kinds: asking, talking with God, pleading for others, and giving thanks. Surprisingly, even the people who make life difficult belong on that thank-you list, since God works through all of them. Prayer for kings and everyone in authority meant praying for the emperors who persecuted...

Meditation Good morning Reader, Today's verses are charged (no pun intended !) with the vocabulary of warfare. The battle in Ephesus is in full swing, Timothy is a soldier and cannot desert his post. He is to hold on to faith and a good conscience in the face of warfare. Two men, Hymenaeus and Alexander, let go of their conscience, and their faith was wrecked as a consequence. The image of shipwreck is particularly potent for Paul, who has himself been shipwrecked on several occasions. While...
