There is still hope for Israel

Meditation

Reader,

Today's passage begins with the stark transitional "But now..." showing a shift from Ezra's awe that God has preserved a remnant and provided the opportunity to rebuild the temple to an understanding that repeating the sin that led to their captivity is unthinkable.

God's grace and his grace alone has humbled Ezra and the returning Israelites into complete submission.

Ezra ends the prayer not by asking for mercy, but by laying the sins of the nation before God and submitting to his "righteous" judgement.

In combination, yesterday's and today's passages form a model prayer of repentance, naming sin, grasping its weight in the light of grace and surrendering judgment to a gracious and righteous God.

Today's text is Ezra 9:10-15

Yesterday's verses are shown in grey for context.

Ezra's Prayer

5 Then, at the evening sacrifice, I rose from my self-abasement, with my tunic and cloak torn, and fell on my knees with my hands spread out to the Lord my God 6 and prayed:

“I am too ashamed and disgraced, my God, to lift up my face to you, because our sins are higher than our heads and our guilt has reached to the heavens.

7 From the days of our ancestors until now, our guilt has been great. Because of our sins, we and our kings and our priests have been subjected to the sword and captivity, to pillage and humiliation at the hand of foreign kings, as it is today.

8 “But now, for a brief moment, the Lord our God has been gracious in leaving us a remnant and giving us a firm place in his sanctuary, and so our God gives light to our eyes and a little relief in our bondage.

9 Though we are slaves, our God has not forsaken us in our bondage. He has shown us kindness in the sight of the kings of Persia: He has granted us new life to rebuild the house of our God and repair its ruins, and he has given us a wall of protection in Judah and Jerusalem.

10 But now, our God, what can we say after this? For we have forsaken the commands 11 you gave through your servants the prophets when you said: ‘The land you are entering to possess is a land polluted by the corruption of its peoples. By their detestable practices they have filled it with their impurity from one end to the other.

12 Therefore, do not give your daughters in marriage to their sons or take their daughters for your sons. Do not seek a treaty of friendship with them at any time, that you may be strong and eat the good things of the land and leave it to your children as an everlasting inheritance.’

13 “What has happened to us is a result of our evil deeds and our great guilt, and yet, our God, you have punished us less than our sins deserved and have given us a remnant like this.

14 Shall we then break your commands again and intermarry with the peoples who commit such detestable practices? Would you not be angry enough with us to destroy us, leaving us no remnant or survivor?

15 Lord, the God of Israel, you are righteous! We are left this day as a remnant. Here we are before you in our guilt, though because of it, not one of us can stand in your presence.”

Encouragement

Ezra's public prayer had a profound impact on the community who immediately recognized their sin and folly and took action to remedy it;

“We have been unfaithful to our God by marrying foreign women from the peoples around us. But in spite of this, there is still hope for Israel.

Now let us make a covenant before our God to send away all these women and their children, in accordance with the counsel of my lord and of those who fear the commands of our God. Let it be done according to the Law.

Rise up; this matter is in your hands. We will support you, so take courage and do it.”

Ezra 10: 2-4

Prayer is powerful! Have a great weekend.

Meditation Reader, I'll let you into my research process for BCC. When looking for passages to feature, I'll start off creating a list from memory and then ask friends and subscribers to identify passages that fit our theme. Then I do a lot of online research creating a shortlist of 40 or so passages that I then revise to create a final program from a variety of sources, reflecting a multitude of styles. The Old Testament books are a rich resource for lengthy and moving prayers. The New...

Meditation Reader, This morning, we are copying out the third part of what is known as Jesus' High Priestly Prayer found in John 17. It is the longest recorded prayer of Jesus in any of the Gospels. Jesus prays this after He finishes His final instructions to the disciples and before He is betrayed, arrested, and crucified. First, He prays a personal prayer for His glorification, then He prays for His disciples, and He closes the prayer by praying for all believers. We copied out the first...

Meditation Reader, One of the most shocking events of my early Christian life was being asked earnestly by a fellow congregant after the Sunday service how she could pray for me. I had never been asked this question before, and I was genuinely unprepared for it. I had no answer. Not even a passable lie. To my (very) new Christian ears, it seemed like such a strange question. "Did I look like I needed anyone to pray for me?" After all, I'd turned up on time in a well-ironed shirt, cleanly...
