Today: Wisdom for giving...and a warning.

Meditation

Good morning, Reader,

So far, this season has focused on grounding our attitude toward our legacy in Christ and establishing leaving an inheritance as an important catalyst for our spiritual growth.

A responsibility not to be discounted, but to be invested in.

This last week provides practical wisdom for giving :- to our children and to the causes we care about. Answering the question: How do we give well?

Our verses today contain a warning sandwiched between two bites of wisdom.

A good person leaves something for their children's children, not just their children. Legacy planning requires a generational mindset.

But an inheritance isn't just the transfer of assets. It's success is built on what you've built into the recipients. Wealth without wisdom tends to get lost within a generation or two, while wisdom tends to keep producing wealth on its own.

These notes of wisdom are paired with a warning: Jacob's obvious favoritism toward Joseph, marked publicly with an ornate robe, which does nothing but breed resentment among his other sons.

Are our choices forming our family for a future without us or fracturing it?

Today's verses are; Proverbs 13:22, Genesis 37:3–4, and Proverbs 16:16

A good person leaves an inheritance for their children's children, but a sinner's wealth is stored up for the righteous.

Proverbs 13:22

Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to him in his old age; and he made an ornate robe for him. 4 When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and could not speak a kind word to him.

Genesis 37:3–4 — 3

16 How much better to get wisdom than gold, to get insight rather than silver!

Proverbs 16:16

Encouragement

5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.

James 1:5

Meditation Good morning Reader, We ended our first week in 1 Timothy on Friday, copying out verses 1–7 of Ch. 2. Paul mandates prayer for everyone, because God wants everyone saved. Today's verses (8–15) show how the church should carry itself in prayer so it serves that purpose instead of undercutting it. Men are to pray without quarrels, and women are to be marked by godliness and quietness rather than display. Paul is urging Timothy (and us) to craft a church whose worship matches its...

Meditation Good morning Reader, A pastor's first job is to lead a praying people. So, Paul puts prayer first in his instructions for the church, ahead of everything else. In today's verses, he names four kinds: asking, talking with God, pleading for others, and giving thanks. Surprisingly, even the people who make life difficult belong on that thank-you list, since God works through all of them. Prayer for kings and everyone in authority meant praying for the emperors who persecuted...

Meditation Good morning Reader, Today's verses are charged (no pun intended !) with the vocabulary of warfare. The battle in Ephesus is in full swing, Timothy is a soldier and cannot desert his post. He is to hold on to faith and a good conscience in the face of warfare. Two men, Hymenaeus and Alexander, let go of their conscience, and their faith was wrecked as a consequence. The image of shipwreck is particularly potent for Paul, who has himself been shipwrecked on several occasions. While...
