Meditation

Reader,

Even after Jesus ascended into heaven, he remains active, as we'll see in the remaining passages from this season.

First with Paul's conversion and concluding with His words to John as recorded in Revelation.

Today, we're copying out the famous text in which Jesus confronts Saul on the road to Damascus. Tomorrow, we'll copy out his commission to Ananias.

Notable in today's text is Saul's description of Christians as followers of the "Way," identifying them as having not only a set of beliefs but also a way of life.

The early Christians had distinguished themselves in society in ways that made them easy to identify and persecute.

Today's text is Acts 9:1–9.

The Conversion of Saul

But Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest 2 and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any belonging to the Way, men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.

3 Now as he went on his way, he approached Damascus, and suddenly a light from heaven shone around him. 4 And falling to the ground, he heard a voice saying to him, β€œSaul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?”

5 And he said, β€œWho are you, Lord?” And he said, β€œI am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. 6 But rise and enter the city, and you will be told what you are to do.” 7 The men who were traveling with him stood speechless, hearing the voice but seeing no one.

8 Saul rose from the ground, and although his eyes were opened, he saw nothing. So they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus.

9 And for three days he was without sight, and neither ate nor drank.

Encouragement

Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changedβ€” in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet.

For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.

1 Corinthians 15:51-52

Reflection Reader, This week's passages focused on prophecies from Isaiah chapters 9 and 11 building up a picture of who Jesus is and how he will reign. Tuesday's passage contrasted the modern idea of peace as a passive absence of conflict with the peace Jesus brings as an active, increasing presence. Where in your life have you experienced Christ's active, increasing peace, and what does it look like to live as if His peace is a tangible presence rather than just the lack of trouble? Isaiah...

Meditation Reader, We've reached the end of the passages drawn from the Old Testament, so today is a rest day before we move into the readings from Luke, Matthew, and John next week. The passages we have copied from Genesis and Isaiah the past two weeks have taken us on a journey of revelation from the desperate fall of man, and God's salvation plan revealed almost instantly, through the confirmation of that promise of redemption to Abraham, to the increasing detail Isaiah's prophesies...

Meditation Reader, The first familiar words in today's passage, "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given," finally turn us toward very familiar advent ground. As I noted yesterday, this future event is written in the present tense. God's salvation plan has been ordained and confirmed, and now it is literally being fleshed out in clear, unequivocal terms. He will come in human form as a vulnerable child. We now know His form, and we know his fashion. He will be wise, mighty,...
