πŸ“– ✍️ Jesus says "You must follow me!"

Meditation

Reader,

The lines we are copying out today show the conclusion of the conversation between Jesus and Peter, as Peter is commanded to "follow me" twice.

Peter has been restored but still needs to be exhorted to stay on track repeatedly...and there is only one track. Following Jesus.

The words "You must follow me" are Jesus' last recorded words in John's Gospel and are a call on Peter's life...and ours.

Today's text is John 21:17b–22.

Jesus Reinstates Peter

Jesus said, β€œFeed my sheep."

18 Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.”

19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, β€œFollow me!”

20 Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, β€œLord, who is going to betray you?”) 21 When Peter saw him, he asked, β€œLord, what about him?”

22 Jesus answered, β€œIf I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.”

Encouragement

There is an interesting tension between Peter being reminded that when he was young, he wandered where he wanted (likely blindly), and towards the end of his life, he will be led against his will but for now he must clear-sightedly follow Jesus.

Only in following Jesus does he (and we) truly live in the light.

Meditation Reader, Today's passage is the last in the "Jesus is Risen" series. Since Easter, we have traced out Jesus' appearances and commissions since the Resurrection. Jesus' final appearance in the New Testament is in the book of Revelation, and I've chosen his last words as the last passage to copy out for this season. Jesus' appearances after the Resurrection are aimed at regathering his Disciples (as well as anointing Paul) and commissioning them for their future work. These passages...

Meditation Reader, We traditionally think of Saul as having been converted on the road to Damascus. In fact, as we see in today's passage, he doesn't actually receive the Holy Spirit until he is in Damascus. Very specifically, in Judas' house on Straight Street. This passage as a whole is startling for its detail and for the contrast with the passage that immediately precedes it. Whereas Paul is stunned by Jesus' appearance and falls to the ground, Ananias is approached softly in a vision and...

Meditation Reader, Even after Jesus ascended into heaven, he remains active, as we'll see in the remaining passages from this season. First with Paul's conversion and concluding with His words to John as recorded in Revelation. Today, we're copying out the famous text in which Jesus confronts Saul on the road to Damascus. Tomorrow, we'll copy out his commission to Ananias. Notable in today's text is Saul's description of Christians as followers of the "Way," identifying them as having not...
